Now, a paddling report from Lake LaSuAn in Williams County, Ohio:

We had some snow this week and it's not even November. With one new place yet to explore and several favorites to visit again, I decided to go to Lake LaSuAn to wrap up the season; then it's time to put my paddles on the wall for the winter and hit the trails instead.

Autumn leaf color is past peak here, yet still abundant, and the air is crisp. It's Wednesday and the place was closed but for some reason the gate was open (you can see a LaSuAn report from June right here, by the way).

It was extremely quiet today. I expected to see more mammals around since they should be active now and foraging for food. At one point I thought I'd finally get to photograph a raccoon but it turned out to be just a brown & white striped cat pretending to be a raccoon.

I was the only person on the property so there were no voices or boat sounds. In addition, the Ospreys have gone south. There were no woodpeckers or birds, no crickets, no flies. The only sound was the occassional dead leaf tumbling past other dead leaves on its way to the ground. It was a pretty day but I was very sad to see the end of Autumn.

On the other end of the lake from the dock, and not visible from the dock, is a resting place complete with a log to sit on and enjoy the view. Disembarking is easy from the shallows and you can walk the ridge trail from there if you like.

A leisurely paddle around the whole lake will take 2-3 hours depending upon how many short cuts you take, how much you rest or sit there and absorb the surroundings, and how many cell phone calls you take along the way.

On the way back to the dock I saw a single Great Blue Heron. Most of them migrate south for the Winter; this one had better get going pretty soon.

Whether you're paddling, motoring (10 hp or less), or hiking, I highly recommend a trip to Lake La Su An Wildlife Area. It's in the middle of nowhere, so don't look for a Holiday Inn, a gas station, or even a drinking fountain. It's just you and nature at this place. Hunting is allowed in the area so take necessary precautions so as not to get shot during hunting seasons. You're pretty safe anywhere on the lake. I've paddled this lake four times now and haven't been shot even once.

Location: to get to the La Su An Wildlife Area, just examine a DNR map. Otherwise, exit the Ohio Turnpike at exit 13 (Route 15), head north to Route 20A. Take a left (west) until you meet County Road 7. Turn right (north). When the road t-bones, turn left. La Su An Wildlife area will be on your right well before a mile has gone by. It's a 60-minute one-way road trip from Toledo.
